Hello, my name is Joshy Abraham, a newly qualified staff nurse, from July 2019.
Since my qualification, I have worked in this hospital, starting with respiratory care and then moving onto an orthopaedic ward.
I’ve been working for the last nine months. In terms of my career before becoming a staff nurse, I was working as a nursing assistant and before that, I was a housekeeper and prior to that, I have experience in retail marketing as well.
As to the learning and development, when I speak of my nine months, I have learned a lot. I have managed to obtain all the skills needed to be a good nurse. I have also tried to attempt a band 6, next level, to be an effective nurse in caring for the patients, and the people around.
Now, why have I chosen University Hospital of Bristol and Weston? I chose to work in this particular hospital because I have always done my placements in this hospital. As a result, I know most of the wards, I am quite familiar with many staff members and I’ve become friends with many of the patients and their families. I love working here and, to be honest, Weston General Hospital is an extended family for me—a home away from home.
Now it is your turn to join our large team of enthusiastic people in Weston Hospital. It is a big jump—a leap from a student nurse to a qualified nurse, carrying a pin number behind you. You could be scared, you could be perplexed, you could be confused. What is awaiting you?
I would say, don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid, because you are not going to walk alone. In this profession, whatever areas of work you take up, you are not going to walk alone. We will be walking with you, side by side, leading you and guiding you.
And I would say finally, whenever you are in doubt, whenever you have a question, never leave it. Always raise it, ask, clarify and going [sic] forward. The experienced team members working with you will always be happy to help you and assist you.
Wish you the very best, and thank you.
Joshy Abraham is one of the 1.5 million valued NHS employees making a difference in the lives of people across the UK. Learn more about joining Joshy by building a career with the NHS at the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust website. We look forward to working with you!
