Introducing Lauren Mackley, Staff Nurse, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust
On a typical day
Currently I am working on the gynaecology ward at St Micheal’s Hospital. I look after patients in early stages of pregnancy who are experiencing complications, women requiring surgery and women receiving treatment for cancer.
One way I’ve made a difference as a nurse or midwife
For 2 years post qualifying I worked on the acute stroke unit. The recovery from some strokes can be long and challenging but with support and education, for the patient and their families, I felt I helped ease this process by passing on my experience and knowledge. A cup of tea and a listening ear can make a huge difference.
What would you say to a young person interested in a career in nursing & midwifery?
Nursing is a very challenging but also a very rewarding career. Be prepared to work hard but you’ll meet some great people along the way!
