How do you complete Return to Practice (RTP)?

Updating can be in the form of supervised practice and formal or private study. However, the study element must be no more than half of the period of updating (e.g., if you are required to undertake 30 days of updating, you may wish to choose 15 days of supervised practice and 15 days of study, or 20 days of supervised practice and 10 days of study).

What is the Eligibility Criteria?

  • Former HCPC registrants (Physiotherapists/ Occupational Therapists/ Speech & Language Therapists/ Dietitians) who live in England and plan to return to work in England once returned to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) register
  • Those who have gained a UK HCPC approved programme and have never been registered and never practised
  • Registrants who remained on the HCPC register upon qualifying for more than two years but have not practised and consider themselves to be out of practice

The programme IS NOT open to:

  • Returnees looking to work outside England when they have returned to the register
  • Returnees that have any fitness/condition to practice issues cited against them by the HCPC
  • Internationally qualified clinicians who are hoping to gain HCPC registration. If you have trained internationally and never formally registered with the HCPC please follow: International registration process

If appropriate, it is likely that you will be invited to an initial informal meeting in person / or Teams to discuss the process and next steps in more detail.

If we can support your request, you will need to ensure that you are fully aware of the HCPC requirements on RTP, and agree to register your interest through the NHSE RTP Programme. More information can be found here:

What will RTP Involve?

Our RTP programme will include clinical practice, formal development opportunities, clinical supervision and support to complete application for HCPC re-registration.

Contracted hours will be agreed on an individual basis according to service needs and re-registration requirements. We are interested in hearing from both full and part-time applicants.

The post will require effective communication skills, collaborative working as part of a multidisciplinary team and good time management.

  • Completing trust induction
  • Completing contracted hours
  • Promoting the trust values throughout your contract
  • Registering with NHSE ‘RTP’ programme

What will happen upon finishing RTP?

There will be no guarantee of any specific roles upon completion of your ‘Return to Practice’. Any AHP vacancies at UHBW will be advertised here: Allied Health Vacancies

In some circumstances, there may be opportunities for you to join the ‘Bank’ (staff bank UHBW) as a ‘Therapy Technician’ or qualified member of staff (upon successful re-registration with HCPC).
