CRITICAL CARE AT UHBW

Our GICU ward is expanding with bed numbers increasing so that we can continue to deliver the best possible care to our patients across the region. We are therefore looking for qualified nurses with acute experience ideally within critical care, to enable this expansion.

There is no better time to join Critical Care at UHBW with 2 major exciting projects just about to start – the setting up of an outreach team and the delivery of the new Bristol ECMO service for the South West in conjunction with North Bristol NHS Trust.

With excellent training and development, six weeks supernumerary, a dedicated team of practice education facilitators and SIM training which lead to a critical care qualification, we have a lot to offer our nurses. The unit is also an early adopter of IT systems with fully integrated bedside patient monitoring.

We can offer job security in these uncertain times within an organisation that is dedicated to the wellbeing of its staff. We understand that we work to live (not live to work) and support flexible and part-time working patterns.

Welcome to GICU

Ward A600 Adult Critical Care Unit is situated in the Bristol Royal Infirmary which is part of the Surgical Division at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston. This purpose unit was built in 2015 with cutting edge technology and an innovative bedside Clinical Information System in place.

General Intensive Care unit (GICU) is a 21 bedded unit which caters for level 3 and 2 (Intensive care and High Dependency) patients and treats around 1300 patients per year. We care for patients from a variety of Specialties Including Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, Haematology and Gynaecology and are also a tertiary referral centre for out of hospital cardiac arrest patients out of hours.

The Multidisciplinary team work closely together and includes Intensive Care Medical team, Nursing staff, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Research team, Pharmacists and Allied Health Professionals. GICU works closely with the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) within the Bristol Royal Infirmary with regards to staff education and training and there are opportunities for Band 5 rotational posts through both CICU and GICU.

We have Critical Care Practice Educators in place in both areas to facilitate education of all staff and the development of new starters. Their role includes supporting staff in the transition from ward based nursing to the Intensive Care environment and ongoing support and training for all staff. A structured education plan is in place for all new staff and we also provide an in house progression pathway for future development and career building in GICU with access to post graduate university courses as well as working alongside the National Competency Steps Programme for Critical Care nurses.

We always value our staff and offer permanent, part time and flexible working within the unit. For further information on the General Intensive Unit care or recruitment opportunities contact the band 7 team on 01173427600.
