Meet David McCalley…
What do you love about your job?
I love learning and working with my colleagues, and I also love making sure our patients are safe and comfortable in hospital. It’s really wonderful seeing a patient actually well enough to go home, hopefully more confident and optimistic about the future ahead of them.
What are the challenges?
The health care support worker role is challenging. I think as a new member of staff, the amount it feels you must learn in addition to the pace of the work, can feel daunting at times. It took me some time to find my feet and my confidence in the role, but what I’ve always remembered is that my colleagues and my manager always stood by me.
When you start out in the role, rather than being included in the main numbers of staff on the wards or in your clinic, you’ll work with an experienced member of staff. They’ll deliver training and support, whether that’s on clinical skills or personal care, or just learning the routine in your place of work and it’s a really good opportunity for you to ask any questions about your role and to increase your confidence.
Why do you love living in Bristol?
Having lived and worked in London previously, Bristol feels much more friendly as a city. The hospital’s located right in the city centre on the main cycle routes. Many of my colleagues cycle into work and on your days off, there’s something for everyone in Bristol, whether that’s music or sports or comedy, or just meeting up with friends.
What advice would you give to prospective employees?
For anyone thinking about the health care support worker role, I advise you to take some time to learn about the role and ask any questions you might have as well. It’s a wonderful role. It’s something I found incredibly rewarding and I’m very pleased that I made the decision to come and work here. You need to have a caring personality. You need to have an interest in people and you need to be willing to learn and progress in your career. But there’s no greater honour than caring for others in hospital, and I can truly recommend the role.
